Drivers using Aynam Road in Kendal will face a new 20mph speed limit from Monday 21 September as work continues on the town’s flood defence scheme.
The restriction follows a traffic management review by Westmorland and Furness Council and Cumbria Police. It will be enforced during the ongoing project, with signs being installed along Aynam Road and within New Road Common to alert road users to the change.
Why the speed limit is changing
The Environment Agency is beginning work on the final town-centre section of the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme. The completed project is intended to improve protection for more than 1,920 homes and 2,250 businesses affected by flooding.
Environment Agency project manager Zohel Ali said the safety of residents, visitors and workers was a priority. He said slower traffic would make the area safer for pedestrians using pavements and crossing Aynam Road, while also reducing the risk to people working behind barriers.
“The safety of residents, visitors and our workforce is a priority, and we want to reassure everyone that we are doing all we can to ensure speed is monitored and managed within the legal parameters.”
Mr Ali added that signs would be placed on New Road Common and Aynam Road, and that lower vehicle speeds would help protect both pedestrians and the construction workforce.
Where to find project information
Residents and visitors who want to discuss the scheme with the project team can visit an information hub in the Lidl car park on Beezon Road. The hub is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm.
