Adults in Kendal can now apply for free or subsidised learning courses beginning during the 2026–27 academic year, with options designed for people starting education, returning to study or building on existing skills.
The programme is delivered by Cumbria Adult Learning through its Kendal centre and other venues across Cumbria. Applicants can compare course locations before applying, making it possible to look for classes close to home or consider learning elsewhere in the county.
Courses available in Kendal
Subjects include English, maths, digital skills, employability, health and wellbeing, and greener learning. Courses are available at Entry Level and Levels 1 and 2, offering different starting points for adults with varying experience.
Skills courses are free, while other classes may be subsidised under the relevant terms and conditions. The programme also includes non-qualification sessions such as arts and crafts, languages, health and wellbeing and other subjects. Some of these sessions may be free or available at a reduced price.
Cumbria Adult Learning says the courses can help residents gain qualifications, explore hobbies, develop practical skills, progress their careers, find work or improve their wellbeing. The non-qualification classes are intended to give adults the chance to try something new and build confidence in a supportive setting.
How to compare venues and apply
The full curriculum is available through the Cumbria Adult Learning website, which will also publish an online version of the programme. Applicants can compare subjects, qualification levels and venues before submitting an application.
Printed brochures are due to be distributed at Cumbria Adult Learning’s six main centres, including Kendal, along with major libraries and key partner organisations. Further information about local centres and enrolment is available through the service.
Training support for workers and employers
Employers across Cumbria can also access the Skills Bridge programme. It provides free, bespoke training for employed staff and people looking for work, with the stated aim of supporting workforce excellence across the county.
Cumbria Adult Learning is a hosted service provided by Westmorland and Furness Council for the whole of Cumbria. Kendal is one of its six main centres.
Ofsted rates the service “Good” overall, while learner personal development is one of two areas graded “Outstanding”. Westmorland and Furness Council reports that 98% of learners are satisfied and 97% say their courses met expectations. Staff provide help and guidance throughout each course.

Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said more than 6,000 people choose to learn with the service each year.
Emma Hamer, Cumberland Council’s Assistant Director for Education, SEND and Inclusion, said there were “hundreds of classes” led by experienced tutors and encouraged anyone considering a new subject to contact the service.
