Adults in Kendal can now apply for free or subsidised courses starting during the 2026–27 academic year, with opportunities ranging from English and maths qualifications to digital skills, employability, wellbeing and creative subjects.
The programme is delivered by Cumbria Adult Learning through its Kendal centre and other venues across Cumbria. People considering a course can compare locations before applying, whether they want to study close to home or look at options elsewhere in the county.
Subjects and qualification levels
Courses cover English, maths, digital skills, employability, health and wellbeing, and greener learning. Qualification courses are available at Entry Level and Levels 1 and 2, giving learners different starting points depending on their previous experience.
Skills courses are free, while other classes may be subsidised under the relevant terms and conditions. The programme also includes non-qualification sessions in subjects including arts and crafts, languages, health and wellbeing and other interests. Depending on the class, these sessions may be free or offered at a reduced price.
Cumbria Adult Learning says the programme is designed to help residents gain qualifications, develop practical skills, progress their careers, find work, explore hobbies or improve their wellbeing. Non-qualification classes also give people the chance to try something different and build confidence in a supportive setting.
How Kendal residents can apply
The full curriculum is available through the Cumbria Adult Learning website, which will also publish an online version of the programme. Applicants can compare subjects, qualification levels and venues before submitting an application.

Support for workers and employers
Employers across Cumbria can also access the Skills Bridge programme. It provides free, bespoke training for employed staff and people looking for work, with the stated aim of supporting workforce excellence across the county.
Cumbria Adult Learning is a hosted service provided by Westmorland and Furness Council for the whole of Cumbria, with Kendal among its six main centres. Ofsted rates the service “Good” overall, while learner personal development is one of two areas graded “Outstanding”.
Westmorland and Furness Council reports that 98% of learners are satisfied and 97% say their courses met expectations. Staff provide help and guidance throughout each course.

Councillor Janet Battye, Westmorland and Furness Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said more than 6,000 people choose to learn with the service each year.
Emma Hamer, Cumberland Council’s Assistant Director for Education, SEND and Inclusion, said there were “hundreds of classes” led by experienced tutors and encouraged anyone considering a new subject to contact the service.
