A Kendal zero-waste shop has secured its future in the town centre after agreeing a six-year lease extension at Wainwright’s Yard.
Another Weigh has renewed its tenancy at the retail yard until July 2032. The shop first opened there in February 2021 and operates a refill-and-reuse model, allowing customers to bring their own containers and buy loose food and household products by weight.
The business was founded by Amy Bray when she was 17. Its profits support Another Way, an environmental charity that encourages youth climate action through conservation projects.
Shop expands opening availability
Jodie Van Rooyen, from the Another Weigh team, said the lease agreement reflected the shop’s commitment to its customers. She added that the shop is now open on Mondays, giving people another opportunity to buy the products they need.
“The staff at Another Weigh are very pleased to announce this commitment to our wonderful customers old and new. “We pride ourselves on listening to them and that’s why we are now open on Mondays. “It means customers can get what they need, when they need it which is what we’re all about. “Two exceptionally hot, dry summers have perhaps made more people realise that they want to take action to lessen their impact on their environment and we are a great place to start. “Change doesn’t need to be big or expensive to make a difference. “We hope to help more Kendal households find sustainable alternatives which suit their needs.”
Van Rooyen said the shop hoped to help more households in Kendal find sustainable alternatives that suited their needs.
Landlord backs independent business
Jonathan Phillips, speaking on behalf of landlord the Eric Wright Group, said Another Weigh had demonstrated that a social enterprise could achieve long-term commercial stability on the modern high street.
“Another Weigh has proven that social enterprise can achieve long-term commercial stability on the modern high street. “They bring a unique, independent energy to Wainwright’s Yard that drives local footfall and complements the other businesses in the yard. “We are proud to support their sustainable business model as long-term tenants.”
