Kendal’s 2026 Christmas lights switch-on will take place on Friday 27 November in and around Market Place, Kendal BID has confirmed. The organisation is running the event, but residents and visitors do not yet have a start time or a detailed programme to plan around.

The date and location were confirmed in listings checked on 4 September 2026. Kendal BID’s event page says:

“Join us in and around the Marketplace to celebrate the annual Christmas light switch on! Timings and more details to be confirmed.”

That means there is currently no published start time, parade route or entertainment line-up. No order for road closures had been advertised either, although the position could change nearer the event.

What is planned for the switch-on

Visit Kendal’s listing gives a broader description of the evening. It calls the event “Christmas Lights Switch-On, Late Night Opening & Farmers’ Market” and says it will feature the switch-on, late-night shopping, entertainment and a special farmers’ market. The listing identifies Kendal BID as the presenter.

The event is free, according to the Christmas diary information published for Kendal. However, the absence of timings means visitors cannot yet tell when the lights will be switched on, when entertainment will begin or how long the late-night opening and market will run.

Market Place is pedestrianised. Because of that, a full closure order may not be needed, but visitors are advised to check travel information closer to Friday 27 November. No temporary traffic regulation order for the switch-on had been advertised on the Public Notice Portal when Kendal postcodes were checked on 4 September.

Separate Christmas celebration has two different dates

Kendal BID is also promoting a separate Kendal Christmas Celebration in Market Place. It is described as a larger festive gathering with Santa’s grotto, Christmas music and stalls selling Christmas fare, taking over the whole of the Marketplace.

Its date is not settled by the published listings. Kendal BID’s own events calendar gives Sunday 6 December 2026, while the Visit Kendal listing, which credits the event to Kendal BID, gives Saturday 5 December 2026. Neither listing includes a time.

The organiser’s own calendar and the fact that the 2025 celebration was held on a Sunday point towards 6 December, but that is not a final resolution of the conflict. Visitors should check Kendal BID’s information before making plans. Traders who want a stall are directed to [email protected] on both listings.

Other dates in Kendal’s Christmas diary

Several other events already have dates and ticket information published:

  • Winter Craft Fair at Blackwell: 13 to 15 November and 20 to 22 November, with prices from free to £15.
  • Kendal Mountain Festival: 19 to 22 November, with passes from £25.
  • Christmas lights switch-on: Friday 27 November, free.
  • Kendal Whisky Festival: at Kendal Town Hall on 4 and 5 December; ticketed.
  • The Elves & The Shoemaker: at Brewery Arts from 19 to 24 December and again on 27 and 28 December, priced at £15.50 or £57 for a family of four.

The Blackwell fair will run over two consecutive weekends, with different makers attending each weekend. The event is part of celebrations marking the house’s 125th anniversary.

The Brewery Arts production is not a traditional pantomime. It is a 50-minute show for audiences aged three and over, produced by Exeter Northcott Theatre and PaddleBoat Theatre Company. The production includes clowning, puppetry and a miniature set.

Performances are listed at 1pm and 3.30pm on Saturday 19 December, followed by performances at 11am and 2pm each day from 20 to 24 December and again on 27 and 28 December. Brewery Arts has not listed a relaxed, British Sign Language or captioned performance.

Parking and travel

Parking is likely to require planning for the Friday evening switch-on. There is no free council car park anywhere in Kendal, and the event falls within charging hours in most council car parks.

Published parking information includes the Blackhall Road before-7am rate and the Sunday rate at South Lakeland House. The latter could be relevant if the separate Christmas Celebration is ultimately confirmed for Sunday 6 December.

Visitors should not rely on older search results for information about the 2026 switch-on. Several outdated pages remain visible, including a 2023 listing for a “Mountain & Sky” switch-on held with Kendal Mountain Festival, a 2019 page about Kendal Town Council being unable to hold a dedicated event, and a passed event page for 16 November 2023. The 2026 Visit Kendal entry uses a nearly identical web address to the old 2023 page.

The 2023 event included a parade from Abbot Hall Park at 5.30pm and a slackliner performing overhead, but that partnership does not apply in 2026. The 2023 festival ended on 22 November, five days before the 2026 switch-on date.

Kendal Town Council’s older switch-on pages now return 404. Its current published events calendar contains committee meetings running to May 2027, with no council Christmas listing. The event is being run by Kendal BID, whose pages should be checked for the final timings, programme and any transport updates.
