The number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits across Kendal’s five council wards reached 320 in August, matching the town’s highest monthly total of 2026.

The figure, compiled from ward-level data published by the Office for National Statistics on 15 September, was up from 305 in July. The entire monthly increase came from Nether ward, where the total rose by 15 to 75.

Because claimant figures are rounded to the nearest five, the change should be treated as a movement rather than a precise headcount. Even so, Nether was the only Kendal ward to rise by more than five during the month.

Nether drives Kendal’s August increase

Claimant totals were unchanged in Kendal Strickland and Fell, at 90, and Highgate, at 85. Castle fell from 30 to 25, while Kendal South rose from 40 to 45.

  • Kendal Strickland and Fell: 90, unchanged
  • Kendal Highgate: 85, unchanged
  • Kendal Nether: 75, up 15
  • Kendal South: 45, up five
  • Kendal Castle: 25, down five

Nether’s August total was a marked break from its recent pattern. The ward had not exceeded 65 in any other month of 2026 and had recorded 60 for five consecutive months from April to July.

Across Westmorland and Furness, only two of the 33 wards rose by 15 in August: Kendal Nether and Windermere and Ambleside, which increased from 70 to 85. Bowness and Lyth recorded the largest fall, dropping from 30 to 20.

How Kendal compares with the wider district

Westmorland and Furness recorded 2,415 claimants in August, equivalent to 1.8% of residents aged 16 to 64. The district total rose by 55 from July, although the previous month’s figures were revised.

The Office for National Statistics revised July’s district total from 2,410 to 2,360 and changed the rate from 1.8% to 1.7%. The Kendal ward total for July remains 305, despite revisions of five in each of two wards. On the revised figures, the district increased by 2.3% between July and August, matching the UK rise and below the North West increase of 2.5%.

August is when school and college leavers begin to appear in the claimant count. Over the year, Westmorland and Furness was the only area in the comparison that did not record an increase. Its August total was down 0.4% from 2,425 in August 2025.

By comparison, Cumberland rose 6% to 4,150, Lancaster increased 4.1% to 2,675, the North West rose 2.9% to 201,555, and the UK increased 2.1% to 1,698,450. The August rates were 2.5% in Cumberland, 2.9% in Lancaster, 3.9% across the UK and 4.2% in the North West, compared with 1.8% in Westmorland and Furness.

Why the figures are not described as Kendal’s unemployment rate

There is no single published claimant count for Kendal. The local figures were assembled from the five ward totals because the Westmorland and Furness district figure also includes places including Barrow, Penrith, Appleby and the south Lakes.

In August, Old Barrow and Hindpool alone recorded 455 claimants, more than the five Kendal wards combined. Other nearby totals included 85 in Windermere and Ambleside, 60 in Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale, 55 in Grange and Cartmel, 40 in Kent Estuary, 30 in Coniston and Hawkshead, 25 each in Burton and Holme and Upper Kent, 20 in Bowness and Lyth, and 10 in Levens and Crooklands.

The claimant count is not the unemployment rate. It records people claiming benefits principally because they are unemployed, but since the introduction of Universal Credit it can also include people working on low earnings who are required to seek more work.

The ward series began in January 2026, so there is not yet a year-on-year comparison for individual Kendal wards. The ONS labels the local-authority table “official statistics in development”, and figures for the previous month can be revised.

The next release, covering September, is due on 20 October 2026.
