Community groups in Kendal can apply for up to £2,500 to support projects tackling anti-social behaviour and crime, after Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner reopened a fund backed by seized criminal assets.

The Community Fund is available to local charities and organisations across Cumbria. Applications must be approved by a local police community support officer or police officer before they can be submitted.

Funding aimed at prevention

The scheme is intended to support initiatives that help keep communities safe, including education and diversionary activities. Since May 2024, it has awarded £468,547 to grassroots projects across the county.

David Allen, Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, said: “Investing in our communities is vital to tackle and prevent anti-social behaviour and crime in our county.”

He said the money came from the seizure of criminal assets, adding that the fund was both putting money back into Cumbria and removing criminality from the county’s streets.

Kendal project among previous recipients

Mr Allen said the funding could make a significant difference to smaller groups. He cited the Kendal Youth Darts Academy among several organisations he had visited after they received Community Fund support during the last year.

Other groups mentioned were Cumbria Taekwondo in Ulverston, Hensingham ARLFC and Creighton Rugby Club. The commissioner said he wanted Cumbrian organisations to continue making a difference in their communities and urged groups with a project to apply.
