Volunteers from Kendal and across the region have helped raise about £2,400 by pulling an 11.5-ton wagon more than 10 miles in the final staging of a long-running charity challenge.

The 26th and final event took place on Sunday, with the team hauling Andrew Woodhouse’s wagon 10.5 miles from Devil’s Bridge in Kirkby Lonsdale to Sedbergh. The group set off at 8.30am and completed the route in three hours, 24 minutes and 19 seconds.

Who took part

Those involved included staff and sports teams from Sedbergh School, employees of Kendal-based Wilson Build, Network Rail staff from Carnforth, members of the Vale of Lune Young Farmers and military veterans from across the UK.

The money raised will be shared between Cancer Research, the Samaritans and the Rawthey Project, a local group supporting veterans who have fallen on hard times.

Donations remain open

Although this was the final wagon pull, donations will remain open online until the end of this month, giving supporters more time to contribute to the three causes.

Organiser Kevin Kirby thanked everyone involved, including the team, photographers, refreshments helpers, marshals and money collectors.

“The team, our photographers, drink and snack helpers, marshals and money collectors were brilliant.
“What a fantastic effort by everyone involved.”

The fundraising effort is set to continue next year, when Sedbergh School will play Caspas Crew in a 104-player mixed three-legged charity football match.
