Parking spaces at the Westmorland Shopping Centre car park in Kendal are set to be widened from next week, in a project designed to make it easier for motorists to accommodate modern vehicles.

Westmorland and Furness Council will begin the work on Monday 28 September. The existing bays, which measure 2.4 metres wide, will be increased to 2.6 metres. Spaces positioned between structural pillars will be widened to more than three metres where this is possible.

How the work will affect the car park

The project is expected to be completed by late October. Contractors will start on level seven before moving progressively down through the building, working on one floor at a time. The phased approach is intended to minimise disruption for people using the car park.

Level seven will be closed while the work takes place. However, the council said all other open floors will remain accessible, and disabled parking bays will continue to be available.

Fewer spaces but wider bays

The changes will reduce the total number of parking spaces at the site. The council said it had reviewed its own parking arrangements to help make more visitor and resident parking available elsewhere in Kendal town centre.

The authority said the scheme followed customer feedback and would provide a more practical experience for motorists. It follows the recent installation of energy-efficient LED lighting at the Westmorland Shopping Centre car park.
