Nether Bridge in Kendal will close to traffic for up to five days from Monday October 12 while repairs are carried out following an incident earlier this year.

The bridge will be shut 24 hours a day as contractors rebuild a 10-metre section of the southern parapet wall, which was demolished in June. Westmorland and Furness Council said the work requires heavy equipment to be positioned on the bridge, so a safe lane for vehicles cannot be maintained during the project.

How traffic will be diverted

A signed diversion will direct drivers away from Nether Bridge via Romney Bridge and Milnthorpe Road. Additional signs will be installed to stop heavy goods vehicles using Parkside Road, where the railway bridge has a height restriction.

Drivers of HGVs should follow the signed route rather than attempting to use Parkside Road. The closure is expected to last for up to five days, although the supplied information does not give a confirmed reopening time.

Pedestrian and cyclist access

Despite the vehicle restrictions, Nether Bridge will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists throughout the repair work.

The bridge spans the River Kent and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The closure follows the earlier damage to its southern parapet, with the immediate project focused on rebuilding the affected 10-metre section.
