Zane Butler has collected two individual honours after a standout performance for Kendal Rugby Club in the club’s home match against Leek.
The winger was named the club’s man of the match after scoring three tries. The club said he should have had a fourth, but instead created a scoring opportunity when a pass failed to reach him.
Butler then went on to receive the RugbyNorth Regional 1NW Player of the Round award, adding further recognition to his contribution during a season in which Kendal says the team’s style of play has been revitalised.
Experience helping a young Kendal side
The club’s director of rugby had highlighted in the previous Saturday’s programme that Butler and several other experienced players raise the average age of a young team. Kendal said Butler continues to play with the energy of his opposite wing, who is half his age.
The club described Butler and his fellow winger as a key part of the team’s improvement this season. It also stressed that all 20 players contributed in the Leek match, with five others receiving votes in the man-of-the-match poll.
Recent voting and next fixtures
Butler had also won the club vote after Kendal’s match at Stockport on 26 September, taking 22 votes, or 29 per cent. Angus Knight won the vote after the home fixture against Macclesfield on 3 October, receiving 42 votes, or 20 per cent. Butler’s Leek performance produced 114 votes, or 44 per cent.
Kendal’s next listed fixtures are on 17 October, when the first team host Wirral with a 3pm kick-off and the second XV host Blackburn 2nd XV at the same time. On 18 October, the senior under-18 Colts are scheduled to play Furness Senior U18 Colts at 2pm.
